For 50 years, WOAR – Philadelphia Center Against Sexual Violence has provided an empathetic ear, a caring heart and a helping hand to anyone who has experienced sexual violence recently, or at any time in their life. Each year, we helped thousands of survivors of sexual violence in Philadelphia through our hotline and in-person support and advocacy.

WOAR is here for survivors of sexual harassment, abuse, and assault because generous donors, like you, made it possible. Generosity gives everyone the power to make a positive change in the lives of others. WOAR is here because you make it possible!

Philadelphia’s summer festival and concert season is in full swing. Incidents of rape and sexual assault tend to increase during the summer compared to other seasons. In the past twenty years, sexual assaults have increased in the summer. Here are a few ways you can stay safe while enjoying your time:

Take a portable charger with you
Go with friends and pick a meeting spot
Pick safe words to text your friends if you are uncomfortable.
If you drink, put a cover on your drink, and never leave your drink unattended.
Stay hydrated.

Myth: Human trafficking involves moving, traveling or transporting a person across state or national borders.

Reality: Many people confuse human trafficking with human smuggling, which involves crossing borders illegally. In reality, human trafficking doesn't require any physical movement. Individuals can be trafficked right in their hometowns or even within their own homes.

April was powerful with your support during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. We connected, educated, reflected, and acted together. For the final event on April 27th, WOAR launched the Philadelphia Survivor March. Hundreds gathered in Love Park, and marched around City Hall and down Market Street to advocate for supporting survivors and ending sexual violence. The march concluded with an inspiring Speak Out at Independence Visitors Center where survivors shared their stories and uplifted everyone in attendance with their courage and wisdom.

All of WOARs services are 100% free and available to anyone in Philadelphia 24/7/365. The need for WOAR services increases every year, but our core funding hasn't increased to keep up with the growing demand. We rely on our community's generosity to sustain our work.
